Egypt's investment climate
Article Abstract:
Foreign investment in Egypt has not grown quickly due to the slow pace of reforms to expand the private sector and to relax the rules governing investment. Privatization has progressed only slightly since economic reforms began in 1991. Law 230, the main statute pertaining to foreign investment, permits foreigners to own 100% of ventures. However, the US government regards Egypt as a poor protector of intellectual property rights. The oil industry has accounted for most US investment in Egypt, which entered into a bilateral investment treaty with the US on Jun 27, 1992.

Syria's improving market for imports and investment
Article Abstract:
Recent economic reforms in Syria have increased the prospects for private sector purchases of capital goods. This indicates that the greater Syrian participation in the world economy that began with the Persian Gulf War is continuing. Syria has reversed the decline in living standards that plagued economic performance over the last decade, but is still burdened by high interest payments on its foreign debt. Market potential exists in oil and gas, water treatment, chemical, telecommunication and electrical industries.

New investment law for hydrocarbons area
Article Abstract:
Algeria's Hydrocarbon Investment Law is designed to encourage foreign oil companies to invest in Algeria's oil and gas sector. The law allows foreign companies to enter into a partnership with the state-owned hydrocarbon firm when exploring for gas. The law provides for international arbitration in the event of a dispute and reduces royalties and petroleum taxes for oil or gas found in certain difficult exploration areas. Other provisions deal with oil pipelines and profits to foreign firms.
