Privatization in the United States
Article Abstract:
Systemic evidence on the political determinants of the privatization decision in the US suggests the importance of political factors. The evidence reveals that state clean-government laws and state laws restricting county spending encourage privatization but strong public unions contradict it. This indicates that, in the privatization decision, political patronage and taxpayer resistance are important in government spending.

Why is rent-seeking so costly to growth?
Article Abstract:
Rent-seeking is any redistributive activity that appropriates resources. There are two ways in which rent-seeking harms growth. First, rent-seeking activities have increasing returns that make them more attractive than productive activities. Second, rent-seeking, especially by government authorities, causes more harm to the innovative activities that propel economic growth than ordinary production does.
