SPAIN: CODORNIU TO PRODUCE QUALITY WINES
Article Abstract:
In 1999-2000, Spanish cava (typical Spanish sparkling wine) producer Codorniu, controlled by Raventos family, has implemented a investment plan amounting to Pta 7,000mn. On the other hand, Codorniu will undertake a diversification strategy, focused on the production of quality wines with 'Ribera del Duero' and 'Rioja' appellation controlee. According to Codorniu's plans, at short term, wine sales should represent 40% of total sales (on current 27%). The group will finance the plan through a long term debt valued at Pta 17,874mn in 2001 and at Pta 25,000mn in 2003.

Spanish producer of 'cava' (Spanish sparkling white wine) Freixenet will undertake a diversification strategy focused on the production of olive oil. Additionally, it is considering to break into South American market, through the acquisition of a firm. On the contrary, the other main Spanish cava producer Codorniu intends to cement its position in the segment of 'appellation controlee' wines. This operation would imply Pta 25,000mn debts in 2003 (on current Pta 10,874mn debts).
