SPAIN: MOVEMENTS IN DATA TRANSMISSION FIELD
Article Abstract:
Former partners and allies of Spanish telecoms operator Telefonica as Dutch KPN, BT and consortium formed by Telia, and KPN, Unisource, are implementing strategies to expand their business in Spain. A fibre optics network connecting the Spanish cities of Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona and Bilbao is projected to be set up by a joint-venture formed by US group Quest and KPN, KPN Quest, with an investment of Pta 30,000mn. The aim is to offer data transmission services. The mentioned joint-venture, jointly with IBM, will also open cybercentres in Europe. Telefonica's strategic ally MCIWorldCom also projects to operate in data transmission through its own fibre optics network (still being built), targeting a 3% market share. Part of its network would be rented to other companies. The sector is led by Telefonica Data (81%; Pta 25,740mn sales in 1st quarter 2000), Global One (3%), IBM (2%), and BT (11%). On the other hand, Telia Iberia (Telia) has started to operate in a field still virgin for Telefonca as it is applications provider on-line (applications rental services).
