Nicaragua's Sandinistas are offering some concessions to their opponents which include a partial amnesty for American-supported guerrillas and freedom to hundreds of Miskito Indians. Other concessions are mentioned. American Secretary of State, George Shultz, gave a cautious, but supportive response. The Reagan Administration is exerting heavy pressure on the government of El Salvador to end the killings of citizens by right-wing death squads.

Is There a Way Out of Beirut?
Article Abstract:
The official reasons for the American air attack on Syrian strongholds in Lebanon, in which two United States aircraft were shot down, are analyzed. The American goal in Lebanon remains to aid President Gemayel in his attempt to stabilize his government's control of unoccupied Lebanon. Congress is divided in its support of American Marines in Lebanon. There is growing speculation that they may be withdrawn in the next few months.
