The New Watch on the Rhine
Article Abstract:
French President Mitterrand advocates a stronger European commitment to the defense of Western Europe. He promotes a cooperative European effort on defense projects, such as an orbiting defense space station. The French are consulting regularly with the West Germans on defense. The French First Army is being reorganized. The West Germans have mixed responses to the French recommendations and actions. They are committed to United States involvement in West European defense. The Europeans may be unable to cooperate on defense, as they find it difficult to cooperate on building a stronger European economy.
