Trade policy in South Asia: recent liberalisation and future agenda
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze trade reforms and future trade-policy concerns in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have realized non-tariff barrier levels that are comparable to their counterparts in East Asia. However, India still falls behind and needs to address concerns associated with the liberalization of its consumer goods market. Results indicated that the region should examine ways to promote cooperation in areas of common interest rather than support trade preferences that lead to trade diversion and a slow down of the trade liberalization process.
