Unemployment and the open economy wage-price spiral
Article Abstract:
A dynamic model of real wages in an open economy which incorporates a well-known model of real wage determination, the incomplete competition model, is presented. It is a system of difference equations that determines real wage, the real exchange rate and the rates of wage and price inflation as functions of world inflation and unemployment. Under the model, the inflation rate itself reconciles conflicting real wage claims, leading to an equilibrium at a constant rate of inflation and at any given rate of unemployment.
