United Kingdom
Article Abstract:
Growth in the UK is improving with inflation dropping back in the short term, according to a report. Economic growth is expected to exceed 3% and consumer spending is expected to rise by 4%. Both major political parties are committed to an inflation target of below 2.5%, and it is likely that the Labour party will introduce a Budget during its first months in government if elected. The report looks at consumer spending, trade performance and investment and discusses the labour and property markets in detail.

The UK economy grew by some 4% in 1994 with a rise in retail prices of some 2.5% in that year. Exports have been boosted by a recovery in the world economy. Consumption slowed in 1994 due to higher taxes and rises in interest rates and it is difficult to assess future trends due to difficulties in interpreting employment statistics. Investment rose by some 3. 5% in 1994 and should rise by some 6% for 1995 and 1996. Economic growth is forecast at 3% for 1995 and 1996.
