Who Needs the Big Four Anyway?
Article Abstract:
Britain's four large clearing banks, Barclays, National Westminster, Lloyds and Midlands, have been protected from foreign takeover by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. The refusal of the Industry Minister to refer a foreign bid for a British insurance group to the Monopolies Commission may signal a new direction in banking takeover policy, as well. Electronic banking will reduce the need for bank branches. The Royal Bank of Scotland, because it does not already have a widespread banking network, is a likely candidate to adopt electronic banking.
