50% plan will cost extra UKPd3bn
Article Abstract:
Investment in higher education will have to increase to UKPd11.7 bil in 2007-2008, vs an estimated UKPd8.7 bil in 2003-2004, if the Government is to reach its target of getting 50% of 18 to 30-year-olds into higher education by 2010, according to the Association of University Teachers (AUT). The AUT claims that only with such an increase in funding can the Government ensure that all of the additional students are fully funded and that student grants for the poorest students are reintroduced.

Australian research boost 'A$600m short'
Article Abstract:
Australian prime minister John Howard has announced a five-year research and innovation package worth A$5.3 bil that will expand on a similar A$2.9 bil scheme that began in 2001. While higher education groups have welcomed the additional money, the National Tertiary Education Union noted that in order to maintain investment as a proportion of GDP, A$5.9 bil should have been allocated, leaving an about A$600 mil shortfall.
