The morality of creature comfort
Article Abstract:
The notion of rights applied to animals has been criticized by Roger Scruton who argues, however, that we have a duty to treat animals better. He sees morality as arising from sympathy and respect for nature which he describes as piety. This argument does not fit well with his view that hunting should be permitted since it involves fear and pain. The notion of rights tends to be used to imply mutual duties, yet in common speech it also involves claims. We are kind to children and retarded adults due to sympathy for their sensibilities.
