Universities should seek links with small and medium-sized local businesses to become more involved in the regional economies, says a report by Manchester University, UK. Small firms accounted for around 34% of universities' industrial income in Scotland, compared with around 28% in Wales and England. Small firms accounted for 33% of research income among universities in Southeast England. Specialist staff should be hired by the unviersities to act as an interface with small businesses.

A high five for British research
Article Abstract:
Fifty-five percent of researchers at British universities were in research programs that earned a 5 or 5* rating in the 2001 research assessment exercise, indicating research at a level of international excellence. Ninety six of the universities participating in the assessment had at least one department that earned a score of 5.

The performance of each university is also rendered graphically. The University of Cambridge, Imperial College and Oxford University had the top scores.
