British university leaders and union leaders, as well as the Cabinet Office Better Regulation Task Force, called for university regulators to put an end to excessive bureaucracy and over-regulation. The president of Universities UK, Professor Floud, is expected to address the issue at the annual vice-chancellors residential meeting in September 2001.

Contract shift puts research role at risk
Article Abstract:
Reading University academics fear that managers will be able to take away their research duties under proposed changes to contracts. The university plans to retrospectively change academic contracts, removing a clause which makes conducting research a 'requirement' of the job.

The Student Achievement Steering Group has cautiously suggested adding an extra classification to the traditional second-class honours degree. The move comes amid concerns that 43 percent of all graduates received a 2:1 last year.
