When experts cost, enthusiasm counts
Article Abstract:
Amateur researchers often provide volunteer services in data collection when professionals are strapped for cash and time, particularly in the underfunded fields of ecology and conservation. A study is being conducted by Earthwatch on the reliability of volunteers, in the hopes of reducing professional bias against data collected by volunteers. The social benefits of volunteering, as well as accuracy and the effects of volunteers' social backgrounds on their effectiveness will be measured.
