A generation clocks on
Article Abstract:
Work placements are likely to become increasingly commonplace in the UK, with both university students and employers benefitting from the schemes. Around 50% of students have part-time employment in the UK, with many more undertaking holiday work to earn their keep. Employers benefit from thestudents' resultant preparedness for work, while academics benefit by keeping pace with the employment market. Employers, government and institutions are urged to offer more work experience placements in the 1997 higher education report by Sir Ron Dearing.

A job's just part of the course
Article Abstract:
A study of US undergraduates found if they worked over 20 hours a week it had an adverse effect on their academic studies. Some education experts support students having more experience of the working environment. A study of 105 UK universities found 56 offered an employment service to its students. There is some concern the students will take work away from other workers particularly as they may be willing to work for lower wages. It is predicted 80% of students will work in the holidays and 60% will also take a job in the term time.

Agricultural colleges hit by farming blight
Article Abstract:
Problems in farming in the United Kingdom have affected agricultural colleges where applications have fallen and college farms have been hit by drops in profits. Reports on agricultural teaching in the United Kingdom higher and further education sectors are scheduled for release in spring 1999. Further education colleges teaching agriculture have been affected by mergers, changes in ways that students are supported, and financial problems, and these problems have led to industrial disputes and job losses.
