A haunting work inspired by the spirit of Chopin and other ghosts
Article Abstract:
Gordon McPherson, head of composition at the Royal Scottish Academy for Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, has been awarded UKPd30,000 worth of funding by the National Lottery through the Creative Scotland awards for research programme in order to conduct research on haunted houses and the voices of the dead. McPherson plans to spend the next year or two going on field trips with ghost hunters to some of the world's most haunted houses in an attempt to record ghostly voices which he will then incorporate into an orchestral suite on the paranormal.

Colleges may get cash to boost business links
Article Abstract:
Colleges in Scotland could be offered cash incentives previously only offered to universities to improve their links with business under proposals from Scotland's emerging joint funding council for further and higher education. The proposal came following the realisation that small and medium-sized companies, which dominate the majority of the economy, actually find it quite difficult to work with the larger universities and that they could benefit from access to the technical and business expertise available at smaller colleges.

HE bill won't affect Scots' drive
Article Abstract:
Jim Wallace, deputy first minister and enterprise and life-long learning minister for Scotland, analyses the potential impact of changes to the higher education funding system in England on the Scottish education system and argues that Scottish universities currently have the edge on their counterparts in England. Wallace addresses the issue of funding for Scottish universities and points out that no matter what, students at English universities will finish with higher debts than those at Scottish universities.
