A liberal solution
Article Abstract:
Cape Town, South Africa, has sought to attract students from all races to its university. The University of Cape Town began a move toward diversity and pluralism in the 1980s. The university sought to identify talent among people of whatever background and to offer admission tests to measure potential for university study. Financial aid has been offered for disadvantaged students, and there is a need for a national scheme to take over this role due to the increased demand.

Return of the natives
Article Abstract:
Higher education in South Africa has been affected by budgetary constraints and poor levels of equipment. South African universities have become part of the world academic system following political changes. They need to undergo rationalization. It is uncertain whether they can attract the top students, or whether such students will seek to study in the US. The universities have moved into a competitive market and this brings new academic contacts as well as challenges.

Between three worlds
Article Abstract:
Afrikaans universities in South Africa tend to cater for a white, Afrikaans population. They have been accused of seeking to remain white, and the language used for teaching acts as a barrier. There is doubt that all South Africa's Afrikaans universities can survive as state subsidies have decreased. Some of these universities may move toward teaching in English. There are also benefits from co-operation between Afrikaans and English universities.
