Revolution required to keep boom on track
Article Abstract:
Britain's higher education institutions need to rethink the scale and scope of postgraduate education and training to meet the demands of society in the 21st century. Higher education and graduate schools face the challenge of providing the lifelong learning considered important for increased economic performance. Postgraduate courses could be modularised to enable more flexible study while certain modules could be customised for employees of certain companies or particular professional groups. Professional doctorates could be extended to such fields as social work and legal studies.

The boom with no yardstick
Article Abstract:
Postgraduate study has now become a significant element of higher education in the UK. This has in turn led to questions being raised about ensuring quality and standards in this field. It is very difficult to decide how quality should be defined, as quality must be assessed in relation to both research and teaching. However, it is vital that attempts are made to create a framework within which institutions and departments offering postgraduate courses can meet agreed quality targets. If this is not achieved, then foreign students may look to countries other than the UK.

The current system of degree classifications fails to give a full picture of the achievements of a student. It is argued that a fuller assessment and declaration of a student's achievement's would better serve their prospective employers, providing them with a better picture of the sort of person they could be employing.
