Axe hangs over top UEA school
Article Abstract:
The government's desire to create a more market-driven higher education sector in the UK looks set to claim two prestigious departments at the University of East Anglia (UEA), which lies in the constituency of education secretary Charles Clarke. The departments which are under threat are the UEA's renowned School of Language, Linguistics and Translation and its drama department. Both departments have been running at a deficit for a number of years and have been given until May 2004 to come up with rescue packages.

A motivator who has shaken up 'crusty old dinners' and more
Article Abstract:
Janet Paraskeva, the chief executive of the Law Society, is to oversee moves by the Society to enact radical changes to legal education in the UK. These changes could hit universities financially and while Paraskeva expresses her sympathies for universities as far as their finances are concerned, she notes that her main concern is for students, specifically for students who could be deterred from entering the legal profession by the possibility of debts of up to UKPd40,000.
