How do we value diversity?
Article Abstract:
Britain's higher education system offers a diverse range of courses to students and it is essential that it continues to do so, but such variety necessarily means that some courses are more expensive than others. The current, formula-based funding method could result in a more uniform system and may also cause a drop in quality. Diversity, if it is valued, must be paid for, with someone making a judgement about which areas of diversity should be retained. The student is best placed to make such a judgement.

Potential for development
Article Abstract:
Research assessment exercises (RAEs) have been useful in targeting where research funding should go but funding councils must now decide what their research roles should be. RAEs should be abandoned, allowing academic staff to concentrate on research and teaching with the knowledge that full funding will be provided for the former.
