Although many Ethiopians subsist on grasspea seeds, they can cause paralysis, retardation and death when used as a dominant food source. Ali Abd El-Moneim is a senior legume breeder at the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas and has conducted a great deal of research on grasspea seeds and has been able to develop a breed of the seed that is safe.
