Barnum meets his napalm nemesis
Article Abstract:
The Vietnam Day Committee (VDC) was founded in the University of California and some consider its formation represented the very beginning of the end of the Vietnam war. This was in Feb 1965 when Pres Johnson said he was going to drop bombs on North Vietnam. Jerry Rubin, a self-confessed student revolutionist, realised that the VDC offered him considerable scope for activism. Vietnam Day started at midday on May 21 and went on for 36 hours. Many famous speakers appeared including Benjamin Spock. Around 30,000 people attended. The VDC disbanded after it was thwarted in a march on Oakland, with many of its then members taking up politics.

Charge of the freedom thinkers' brigade
Article Abstract:
The Academic Freedom Programme was founded in 1996 by Human Rights Watch to raise public awareness of politically-motivated civil rights abuses of academics worldwide. Academics in countries such as Uzbekistan and Belarus are being discriminated against and censored, with teachers prevented from freedom of expression or independent reporting. Some academics become political prisoners. Political and civil liberties are crucial components of a true university where academics can act as an apolitical intellectual resource.

Free thinkers working to create a free society
Article Abstract:
A history of the development of anarchism is presented, from the anarchistic ideas of dissident writers in the ancient world, up to and including modern-day anarchy. Although some anarchists use actions such as suicide, insurrection, and assassination to achieve their democratic ends, most anarchist groups denounce violence and dominate peace movements.
