Birkbeck tells media critics to buzz off
Article Abstract:
Birkbeck College, London University, England, takes on part-time students who tend to be older than average, and many have family commitments. They often study part-time while they are working. More than 40% of the students are studying for higher degrees. The college sent a team of volunteers to a TV quiz program called University Challenge. The team achieved a low score but this should not reflect on the performance of the college, nor the abilities of its students. The team had initiall performed well in trials prior to the TV show, but froze when they appeared on television.

Is she a news reader or a new Darwinist?
Article Abstract:
Academics at UK universities generally dress very casually, and some are hard to distinguish from the students. This contrasts sharply with dress codes in the business world, where dressing smartly is regarded as essential to career progression. However, there are occasions when it is appropriate for academics to dress more smartly. These are generally formal events, such as a job interview, an external exam board or a degree ceremony. Some observers believe that academics will begin to dress more smartly as academia becomes more bureaucratic and managed.
