Bravehearts, high hopes
Article Abstract:
Many different groups in the Scottish higher and further education sectors intend to make new demands of the Scottish parliament when it comes to power. They hope the introduction of a Scottish parliament will lead to more funding for education. Some groups emphasize the important role of research in universities. The teachers want parliament to stop fixed term contracts and introduce a pay review body. Other interested groups point to the important role education plays in providing, income, employment and exports in Scotland.

John Haldane is professor of philosophy at St Andrews University and the first known practising Roman Catholic to hold this position in Scotland since the Reformation. Pope Benedict XVI recently appointed John Haldane a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Culture.
