Change comes hard in Chile
Article Abstract:
Chile plans to introduce the State Universities Framework Law in 2nd-half 1997 as a means of modernising the 16 state universities in the country. Management will be given greater flexibility than under the Pinochet regime, with staff and students also permitted to become full members of university higher councils. The new law will include provisions for research investment, the improvement of quality control, the development of undergraduate and postgraduate education and for clarifying the level of government representation.

How to: teach arts students numeracy
Article Abstract:
Numeracy is a useful tool for employees as it helps with independent, critical reasoning, but social science students are generally lacking numeracy skills, according to research. Arts students may need to use graphs and statistics when employed to estimate costs, plan or identify problems, but just 27% of arts students surveyed demonstrated level 3 numeracy skills. Numeracy should be incorporated into arts work programmes in the same way that communications skills should be incorporated into science works programmes.
