Article Abstract:
Ministers in Scotland have confirmed that core funding is to be withdrawn from the Hannah Research Institute in April 2006, a move that has called into question the future of basic science at Scotland's stand-alone biological and agriculture research institutes. Bob Irvine, head of the Science and Research Group at the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department, contends that the aim of the move is to give the institutes a greater degree of freedom to set their own research strategies and find their own funding.
