Frames and ambitions
Article Abstract:
Subdegree courses will receive additional funding in order to offer 1,000 extra places for students in 1998-99. The aim of introducing subdegree courses is to extend the type of qualifications offered by higher education colleges, without compromising degree courses. Subdegrees are seen as eventually leading to a bachelors degree. Educationalists have called for an opening up of the higher education system to more people. Admission to universities in the UK differs according to class, with twice the number of students from higher socioeconomic classes attending university.

Can we handle more of the working class
Article Abstract:
The expansion of higher education in United Kingdom further education colleges could have a number of effects, not all of which would be beneficial. Benefits could include better library facilities, more opportunities for students, and more career opportunities for staff. Problems could include stress affecting further education staff who see higher education teaching as threatening and who do not have a research base. A hierarchy could also emerge with higher education seen as more important and subsidized by further education.

Battle of the baby bulge
Article Abstract:
Higher education (HE) has expanded in the UK, and further education (FE) colleges have become involved in HE provision. FE colleges are worried that some universities are coming to see them as a threat, and that the Higher Education Funding Council is increasingly hostile to their role in HE. HE is no longer expanding as rapidly, and there is a view that student numbers could be reduced to boost quality. Students are reluctant to relocate and take on debt, which has affected demand.
