Free up training, academy urges
Article Abstract:
Universities in the UK should be free to determine their own professional development programmes for staff, according to the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The HEA is due to commence its final round of consultations on its national framework for professional standards, which will enable institutions to create continuing professional development programmes that meet the needs of their staff rather than having to stick to development frameworks imposed by government agencies, on 29 August 2005.

Lectures are cut to learn how to teach
Article Abstract:
De Montfort University has launched an innovative new scheme under which the teaching load of new lecturers will be halved in order to allow them to learn how to teach. Rob Brannen, head of the university's department of performing arts and English, notes that for many lecturers the first year of teaching is the hardest thing they ever do and that hopefully, this new scheme will give them some space to learn what it means to teach.
