Get a job in academe? You must be joking
Article Abstract:
A former lecturer in history who now works as a supply teacher explains why she left her old job and why she will probably never go back to university teaching. She argues that university lecturers are overworked, underpaid and are generally unappreciated, and that they are ultimately too gutless to do anything to alter the situation. She acknowledges that teaching postgraduates and undergraduates has its advantages, but she argues that for sheer entertainment, teaching schoolchildren cannot be beat.

Columbus and my voyage of discovery
Article Abstract:
A lecturer in history and American studies at the University of Manchester describes her experiences with trying out problem-based learning, which is common in the sciences and maths, on her second-year history students. The use of problem-based learning helped the students to question the authority of the texts they were studying, which has carried on into the secondary sources used for essays, while group work has helped build confidence amongst shyer students.
