World must play its part in rebirth of Iraqi academe
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the refurbishment of the university system in Iraq and the international community's involvement in this process are examined from the point of view that such action will raise aspirations in the country and encourage the free exchange of ideas. It is pointed out that until 1990, Iraq had the best university system in the Arab world, so, unlike Afghanistan where the whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch, what needs to happen in Iraq is more a case of refurbishment of existing infrastructure. Iraq has 18 universities, 38 technical institutes, nine technical colleges and 10 specialised research centres which enrol 300,000 students and have almost 15,000 academic staff.
