Help for the academic nomads in search of their own sympathetic tribe
Article Abstract:
Universities, in the UK, should recognize the value of the work carried out by interdisciplinary researchers and make better use of their output. The quality of researchers is likely to improve if applied interdisciplinary research is judged on the same level as other academic work. It is different but has equal value. Interdisciplinary researchers often find it hard to get promoted and therefore revert to researching one subject. The skills are lost to interdisciplinary research. A study by the Evaluation Associates found interdisciplinary research receives less funding than other research.
