Article Abstract:
Theodette Abayisenga is being held up a symbol of ethnic unity in her country of Rwanda, 10 years after the country's savage genocide started. Theodette, who is 26 years old and had a leg amputated seven years ago following an attack on her school by armed Hutu rebels, is preparing to take up her place at the National University of Rwanda at Butare. Theodette argues that nobody should be killed for their ethnic origins.

Teaching in Burma has been ravaged by a government set on repressing free thought and by rote learning by monastic schools. Four decades of military rule have had a deleterious effect on education and two fifths of children in Burma never make it to school, according to a Unicef report.
