Japan faces number crunching future
Article Abstract:
Japanese higher education establishments are threatened with financial ruin as increasingly competitive economic conditions in the Japanese education system take hold. Some establishments may have to close even though the education system has received significant financial funding from a variety of sources including the Japanese government. The system has undergone a major upheaval in recent times to address the changing needs of the student population.

Synthesis further education; colleges come of age
Article Abstract:
On Apr 1 1993 600 further education (FE) and sixth-form colleges are handed over to a new funding body, Further Education Funding Councils, rather than their local authorities. The government would like to see a 25% growth in student admissions, and will make 15% more funding available. New targets have been set for students to achieve certain levels of qualifications by the end of the century.
