Kicking sand at Uncle Sam
Article Abstract:
The British Council is trying to help UK colleges and universities attract more students from the Gulf and so challenge the US's dominance in this market. The market the British Council and UK educational establishments are targeting consists of two segments: the children of expatriates; and United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationals, of whom many win private-sector of government funding to study abroad. UAE nationals tend to regard the US as having a more open and attractive culture than the UK. The British Council is now backing the UK presence at an education and training fair in Dubai.
