Last-ditch bid to win over rebels
Article Abstract:
Universities UK (UUK) is demanding unity from all member vice-chancellors in its efforts to get the government's higher education bill through its second reading, which is expected to take place on 27 January 2004. The vote is expected to be "knife-edge" and UUK is so keen to see it passed that it has engaged the services of Finsbury (UK), PR firm, to help it lobby MPs. Some vice-chancellors, such as Michael Driscoll, vice-chancellor of Middlesex University, who had previously been wary of the bill now support it, arguing that the government has moved on the issues that they had concerns about and the bill now offers a better deal for poorer students and poorer universities.
