Luton 'failed to act' on auditors warnings
Article Abstract:
Luton University failed to act on warnings that it received from Robson Rhodes, the university's auditors, about the mismanagement of Luton University Enterprises (LUE), a subsidiary company of Luton University. A series of audit reports warned in 1997 that the company had no formal management, no management accounts and no budget, a position deemed by the auditor to be wholly unacceptable. Annual audit reports since that date have shown that a number of the issues have never been dealt with and, in 2002, auditors stated that there was no evidence that LUE's directors were in "effective" control of the company.

Governed by a bunch of old fogies?
Article Abstract:
Research has revealed that university governors are between 46 and 65 years old. Only 17% were female, falling to 9% among board chairs. The job is voluntary and many governors have external business interests which could compromise an independent attitude to university business. According to 76 year old Patrick Lister, former chairman of the Coventry University board of governors, retired folk make better chairs.
