Magnificent seven head French growth
Article Abstract:
France has created seven new universities to cater for expansion of student numbers by the year 2000. Four are in Paris, the other three in the regions. Funding has been supplied by central and local government and commerce. All the new universities have strong links with the older institutions, especially those in Paris. The new universities have had some teething troubles with overcrowding and new buildings being too quickly constructed.

Bac on the fast track for France's elite
Article Abstract:
French students wishing to enter the most prestigious colleges have to attend special preparatory classes. Entry to the 'grands ecoles' is very competitive, and students follow a gruelling schedule, but the numbers wishing to try has doubled in the past decade. Critics say that the system is too geared towards a small minority of high-flyers, particularly those good at maths.
