Manic research roundabout is the only ride in town
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the demands put on academic researchers by the research assessment exercise (RAE) and advice on how to cope with these, ever increasing demands. It is concluded that learning to cope with the RAE will at least give academics the possibility of rewards. The only other option, stepping away from work that leads to the RAE, only leaves the academic open to work, such as teaching, that is increasingly bogged down by bureaucracy and which has few, if any, rewards.

Tomorrow's stars at risk if RAE is ditched
Article Abstract:
Careers of promising young researchers could be at risk if the RAE is replaced with a metrics-based system for allocation of university-wide research grants, according to a study by the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi). Distributin general block research grants on the basis of external research grants won would make universities more dependent on established researchers who have a record of bringing in cash.
