Minister vows to continue revolution

The Israeli education minister, Amnon Rubinstein, aims to continue in his post and achieve targets such as a pass rate of 33% for first degrees. The government faces elections in May 1996. Rubinstein chairs the Council for Higher Education, which decides on Israeli policy toward universities. The budget for education has increased since 1992, and accounts for 14% of total government spending. Teachers' salaries have been increased, and there has been a drive to help weaker students gain access to a first degree.

Fibre-optic olive branches

The Open University is Israel is using fiber-optic technology for distance learning. A pilot scheme has been launched and new technologies include the Ofek system. This system is a JV between Arel Communication and Software and Gilat Communication Engineering. The university was set up in 1974 and previously used traditional technology such as written materials and radio and TV broadcasts. The Israeli Council for Higher Education provides accreditation

Fury over book on blood libel
Article Abstract:
"Pasque di Sangue", written by Ariel Toaff, a professor of medieval and Renaissance history at Bar-Ilan University, has caused outrage in Israel, for claiming that the Jews in Middle Ages killed Christians for ritual purposes. A group of Italy's senior rabbis have condemned the book stating that Jewish tradition does not give permission for use of human blood for ritual purposes
