'Opaque' course costs set alarm bells ringing
Article Abstract:
Some universities in the UK spend nearly three times more per medical student than other institutions and almost four times more per nursing student, according to a report produced by the Higher Education Policy Institute. The report calls for the establishment of a single funding body for all health students, arguing that the existing system is full of anomalies, inefficient and lacking in transparency.

RAE link to funding may thin PhD ranks
Article Abstract:
Howard Green, outgoing president of the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE), has produced data which shows that a number of old universities will lose out as a result of plans to withdraw funding for training doctoral students in departments rated below 4 in the 2001 RAE. Universities should be encouraged to pool expertise and share teaching of PhD students.
