'Naive' UK risks losing millions
Article Abstract:
Universities in Europe may soon be able to hire UK researchers and take their research council funding as a result of a partnership agreement between 12 funding agencies across Europe. Graham Richards, chairman of chemistry at Oxford University and one of the university's most famous entrepreneurs, has criticised the agreement, noting that as a result of it a German university was able to poach one of his key researchers and over UKPd650,000 in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, funding that was paid for by UK taxpayers.

Break up RAE scam
Article Abstract:
It is time that the dual-support system for funding university research in the United Kingdom was done away with and replaced with a single open and transparent competitive tendering system of project funding. It is argued that such a system would improve the regional distribution of research, foster collaboration, reduce duplication and be more productive and efficient, while the current system - based around the research assessment exercise - is at the heart of many of the things that are wrong with higher education in the UK.
