A ship's evolution from globetrotter to coastguard
Article Abstract:
The founder of the Scottish Institute of Maritime Studies at the University of St Andrews describes his efforts to locate the Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin traveled around the world developing his ideas about evolution. It is suggested that the Beagle worked until around 1870 for the English Coastguard service, helping top combat smuggling, after which it was sold off, probably to be broken up.

In the Green Man's shadow
Article Abstract:
An examination of how best to preserve the ancient woodlands of Britain, which are living time capsules documenting centuries of human exploitation of the environment. It is argued that what is key to the preservation of the woods is to understand the past so that we can make informed decisions about the present and thereby influence the future.
