Nigerian strikers' salaries stopped
Article Abstract:
The wages of all university lecturers throughout Nigeria have been stopped as of December 1994 by education minister Iyorchia Ayie in response to the lecturers' four-month strike over study conditions and military interference. The university system has come to a complete halt due to the strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities which has 10,000 members. Head of State General Sani Abacha has demanded a return to work by the lecturers, with the striking union reportedly due to be removed from its official offices by the military junta if it fails to call off the strike.

Under the yoke of the generals
Article Abstract:
Nigeria's 15 years as a military dictatorship have eroded the country's education system. Military intervention at universities has essentially converted campuses into military barracks and lecturers have either been suspended or dismissed. External support for universities has also been affected with funding being deliberately reduced and hundreds of teachers seeking work elsewhere in Africa, Europe or the Americas.

Campuses closed for World Cup
Article Abstract:
Nigeria's universities face closure during March 1995, in order to avoid student activism during the Junior World Cup football tournament, which is to be held in Nigeria. The country's 31 universities have only just been re-opened following a five-month strike by lecturers. The government has proposed college closure in order to avoid demonstrations like those held in Mexico during the 1966 Olympics.
