Night of the Ig wannabees
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the Ig Nobel awards and the reaction of those within the scientific community to them. The stated aim of the organisers of the Ig Nobel awards is to celebrate science that makes you smile and then makes you think. Winners of Ig Nobel awards include Chris Frith and Richard Frackowiak, who demonstrated that the hippocampus of taxi drivers was unusually large, and Sir Michael Berry who, for his work on the suspension of non-metallic objects in a magnetic field, once levitated a living frog.

Article Abstract:
Scientists need to think of ways in which they can avoid the public backlash that surrounded the introduction of genetically modified food in the United Kingdom if they wish to see whatever scientific advances they come up with usefully introduced to society. Properly engaging the public in an informed debate about scientific research and how it relates to generally accepted public mores would be one way to avoid such a backlash.
