...believe the European Parliament must not outlaw stem-cell research
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the decision by the European Parliament to ban medical research involving the use of stem-cells are examined. It is argued the decision will hamper research into diseases such as Parkinson's or diabetes, is opposed by the government of the UK, runs contrary to the scientific judgment of the Medical Research Council and the Royal Society, ignores the European bioethics advisory group's opinion and overrides the demands of patients' organisations such as the Parkinson's Disease Society.

'Bitter' feud stalls hunt for CJD cure

Attempts to develop a cure for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a fatal brain disease, are being hampered by a longstanding feud between the only two academic units working on the disease in the United Kingdom. The Medical Research Council prion unit at the Institute of Neurology in London and the CJD surveillance unit at Edinburgh University have been unable to come to an official agreement about how they should co-operate after years of negotiation.
