Overseas students better at English
Article Abstract:
British students are more likely to make grammatical and spelling errors than their overseas peers, according to Dr Bernard Lamb, reader in genetics at the biological sciences department at Imperial College London. Dr Lamb used the chi-quare test on a sample of 650 British and overseas students and found that those with English as their mother tongue were more likely to have a poor grasp of the language that those with English as a second language.

Private colleges in the UK can now be granted degree-awarding powers and the College of Law was th first to receive these powers from the Privy Council following a review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). Academics at UK universities are distrustful of the motives of the private colleges, fearing that they may motivated purely by profit.

Fees drive students from old to new

Many post-1992 institutions have seen a growing number of applicants, helped by the prospect of tuition fees, according to figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS). More traditional universities have seen a fall in applications and there are also geographical hot spots.
