Media and democracy: A strange paradox
Article Abstract:
A paradox exists between the declared political objectives of broadcasting and the available television output in Europe. Television is supposed to help shape citizens' opinions on key issues and enable their participation in the democratic process through 'knowledge oriented' programming. However, the available inferior and irrelevant programming is hindering the purpose.

Uncle Joe's less obvious legacy to the oppressed
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the impact that Joseph Stalin had on the creation of the human rights movement. It is argued that, without Stalin, people would not have realised that dictators and oppressors could come from both the political Left and Right and that human rights are needed to defend against oppressors of all stripes.
