Part-timers' lament
Article Abstract:
The unfair treatment of hourly paid part-time lecturers, working in UK universities, is likely to be partly addressed when the Part-Time Work Directive is fully introduced by Apr 2000. Some 20,000 lecturers work part-time. They are often employed on an hourly basis and therefore do not get paid for time spent on marking books or preparation for lessons. Most have fixed-term contracts. A survey by the lecturers union found a third of the 130 respondents were very unhappy about their pay and conditions.

Intimidation is part of the game, minister warns
Article Abstract:
The Zimbabwean minister for higher education warned academics that they should not mix political activities and their work. They are allowed to join political parties but should not become too active. The minister also criticised a perceived gap between the needs of industry and the courses on offer. This is particularly evident in agriculture, engineering and political studies.
