Picky, coddled students: make them read Beowulf
Article Abstract:
There is concern that standards have been affected by the exapnsion of education in the United Kingdom, with universities competing for students, and students having more say in decisions on the curriculum. Rewards are emphasised rather than challenges, but there is a need for students to become involved in intellectual struggles in order to benefit from higher education. Intellectual coherence can suffer if students are allowed to decide the curriculum. Students need guidance and leadership when deciding what to study.

Caught in the crossfire of conflicting cultures
Article Abstract:
The work of university teachers cannot be guided by a set of objectives, they must be allowed to look for more than performance indicators from their students. Sometimes the indicators will be directly opposed to each other, such as being directed to admit poorer students knowing they may have to leave in the future, for financial reasons. Education cannot be managed purely as a business and university teachers find it very difficult to observe market rules and make judgements in the public interest.
